Well there’s been some more interesting news from the music world recently, namely that new material might be on the way from Alice in Chains. This would be the band’s first new material in about 13 years, and of course would also be the band’s first without original vocalist, and now deceased, Layne Staley. William DuVall guested as the vocalist on the band’s reunion tour and apparently the chemistry is right, the band is having fun jamming, and so Jerry Cantrell and company have started writing.

Alright, back to regularly scheduled programming here at the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Bout time too if you ask me as I really missed the carnival last month. It’s a good dose of what’s going on in the world of rock on the internet usually with a great range of topics and articles. One good thing that did come from missing the June carnival it seems though, is that this month got a lot more entries than I normally see… which is pretty sweet.

The BBC will air a long lost Beatles interview featuring John Lennon and Paul McCartney talking about the day they met and their songwriting partnership. The amazing film interview lay forgotten for over 44 years in a garage in south London until film fan Richard Jeffs realized a piece of pop culture history at his fingertips. Experts were quite surprised to find the audio portion still usable for radio broadcast.
The nine-minute interview was recorded at the Scottish Television studios in April 1964 during the early days of Beatlemania. It will be broadcast for the first time on BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday and repeated later this week. On the tape, Lennon tells how he was playing with a skiffle band outside Liverpool when McCartney introduced himself. I am really looking forward to hearing this historic interview.

British singer and tabloid start wins song and record of the year but loses album of the year in a huge upset to Herbie Hancock. Kayne West wins four Grammys including rap album of the year.
Winehouse, nominated for six awards, lost the final prize in a shocker when Herbie Hancock took album of the year for “River: The Joni Letters.”
For a while it seemed impossible that Winehouse would perform at all. She recently entered a drug rehabilitation center after months of erratic behavior and canceled performances, not to mention the anthemic “no, no, no” resistance of her hit song.

Yesterday was a truly sad day for rock and roll as one of it’s original founding members passed away. Bo Diddley died yesterday of heart failure after months of ill health at the age of 79, and so I thought I would take today to mourn his passing, offer condolences to his family and friends, and more than anything celebrate his music, and lasting contributions to rock and roll.
Although he is often lumped in with some of the other early rock and roll and blues players of his time, Bo Diddley truly had a sound all his own that inspired countless artists from the classic rock era till this day. Even if you’d like to claim that you’ve never heard a Bo Diddley song, chances are if you listen to any classic rock at all, you have… his influence is that far reaching. The Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, the Doors, the Clash, David Bowie, Buddy Hollie, ZZ Top and many more all covered, or borrowed from him and his unique style.

This is the nineteenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I’m writing for this site. I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month.
Although many bands have gone unrecognized over the years yet have made tremendous impacts on rock and roll, there are a few that seem to really garner a cult following, yet linger in obscurity for everyone else in spite of their influence. King Crimson definitely seems to fit into that category. I can hear their influence in a number of the harder hitting progressive bands of modern times, including some of personal favorites, which makes me wonder why it took me so long to hear about King Crimson themselves and subsequently check out an album by them. I also start to wonder why once I did hear their music, I still wasn’t sold. I become a fan of Robert Fripp’s guitar work pretty quickly, but for whatever reason, I wasn’t a King Crimson fan until just recently (as in the past few months). Now I have a number of their albums in my collection, but I continually come back to their very first the most often.

A few days ago I read an interesting bit of music news that struck another one of those “I’m going to start ranting” chords. Apparently record label, Atlantic decided to sue both Scott Weiland and Eric Kretz of the Stone Temple Pilots for not delivering on their end of their contract and trying to terminate it. Atlantic apparently not only wants the 6 albums that STP already delivered during their heyday, but also the seventh that the recently reunited band has indicated they might like to record, as well as two more albums.

When it comes to guitarists, sometimes the best aspects of a great player’s music goes completely unrecognized by the masses. Sure, playing a flaming guitar with your teeth has a bit of a bigger impact than crafting a beautiful rhythm part, but both are equally important when discussing what makes certain guitarists great.
Jimi Hendrix is a good example of this because although most people consider him one of the guitar masters (if not THE guitar master), not everyone actually realizes why? As I discussed in the previous part of this 3 part tribute to Jimi, technique has a lot to do with it and although it might be the most noticeable at first glance, but it isn’t the only thing. For me, one of the major things that makes Hendrix the master of the guitar is actually his subtlety and the beauty of some of his guitar work.

It’s time for me to get back into the blues again. Been listening to a lot of old blues classics recently, people like Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson and one of the few remaining links to that era… Mr. “Honeyboy” Edwards. As it usually does, my renewed interest in the blues has lead me to search the internet and and see what new things I can find. This time I not only found a few great videos of David “Honeyboy” Edwards playing some incredible solo blues, but an interesting organization called the Blue Shoe Project.

One of my favorite things to do lately is to find cool remix videos of popular music on YouTube. There are so many cool and creative folks out there that do a fantastic job at creating these vids. One of my favorite (I am posting below) is a couple of hot sexy babes named Lynne & Tessa, they do tons of great fun remixes and they even have their own website. I have also been know to spend time checking out the latest movies archive when the mood strikes.
