LOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) – The Knack's lead singer Doug Fieger, who co-wrote the 1979 hit song “My Sharona,” died on Sunday, aged 57, after battling lung cancer for six years.

His family said in a statement that Fieger passed away at his home in Woodland Hills, California, after outliving his doctors' prognoses “for many, many years.”

The Knack lead singer Doug Fieger dies

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Doug Fieger, leader of the power pop band The Knack who sang on the 1979 hit “My Sharona,” died Sunday. He was 57.

Fieger, a Detroit-area native, died at his home in Woodland Hills near Los Angeles after battling cancer, according to The Knack’s manager, Jake Hooker.

Fieger formed The Knack in Los Angeles 1978, and the group quickly became a staple of Sunset Strip

Surf-rock pioneer Richard Delvy dies at 67 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Richard Delvy, a pioneering surf-rock drummer, composer, arranger, publisher and producer, died February 6 at West Hills Hospital in California after a long illness. He was 67.

Born on April 20, 1942, in Bridgeport, Conn., Delvy relocated to Southern California and became the drummer for the Bel-Airs, one of the earliest surf-rock groups. The band had a regional hit with the instrumental

Jazz musician Sir John Dankworth dies at 82

LONDON (AP) — Sir John Dankworth, the British jazz composer, saxophonist and band leader, has died. He was 82.

Jazz singer Dame Cleo Laine — who married Dankworth in 1958 after meeting during an audition for a spot with his band — announced her husband’s death before the finale of an anniversary concert at The Stables, the theater they founded together.

NEW YORK (AP) — Grammy-winning pianist Earl Wild, who learned his craft from students of Liszt and Ravel and became one of America’s masters of the keyboard, has died at age 94.

Wild died of congestive heart disease Saturday at his home in Palm Springs, Calif., publicist Mary Lou Falcone said Monday.

US songwriter Bobby Charles dies at 71 (AP)

NEW ORLEANS – Bobby Charles, the Louisiana singer-songwriter who penned such hits as Fats Domino’s “Walking to New Orleans” and “See You Later Alligator” by Bill Haley and the Comets, has died. He was 71.

Paralyzed singer Vic Chesnutt dies after overdose (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Vic Chesnutt, a paralyzed singer-songwriter whose painful and poignant songs caught the attention of R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, has died after an apparent suicide attempt. He was 45.

Chesnutt died at a hospital his hometown of Athens, Ga., on Christmas Day, two days after taking an overdose of muscle relaxants.

Guitarist for Janis Joplin’s Big Brother band dies (AP)

LOS ANGELES – James Gurley, the innovative guitarist who helped shape psychedelic rock’s multilayered, sometimes thundering sounds as a member of Big Brother and the Holding Company, the band that propelled Janis Joplin to fame, has died of a heart attack. He was 69.

Gurley was pronounced dead Sunday at a Palm Springs hospital, two days before his 70th birthday, the band announced on its Web site.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Vic Chesnutt, the folk-rocker whose sometimes dark reflections on life were influenced in part by a car wreck that left him paralyzed, has died. He was 45.
