LOS ANGELES – Simon Cowell believes a woman is likely to win his final season on “American Idol.”

The acerbic British judge told a teleconference Thursday he thinks one of the 12 women among the ninth season’s 24 semifinalists has a good shot to win the Fox singing contest.

Group Night On American Idol: Dysfunction, Bad Song Choices, & Some Good Things TooAh, it’s group night on American Idol. Finally. Yes, I’m a sucker for group night. There’s nothing quite like seeing a bunch of marginally talented people acting they’re on the same plane as Lady Gaga and quickly turning on each other like a pack of self-absorbed jackals. This is the only real “reality show” drama we get all year on this show, and it’s great fun every year.

When Wednesday’s episode had ended, Michael Lynche, known as “Big Mike,” was the proud father of a newborn baby girl and had made it into the next round of the singing contest.

LOS ANGELES – Simon Cowell’s brother says the next season of “American Idol” will be the judge’s last.

Tony Cowell said in his weekly podcast, “The Cowell Factor,” that a statement was being prepared that would certify that the acerbic British judge was leaving the popular Fox signing competition at the end of 2010.

American Idol Returns Jan. 12 For 9th SeasonNEW YORK (AP) — “American Idol” will return next month with a two-night, four-hour premiere featuring auditions in Boston and Atlanta, the Fox network says.

The Boston auditions will air Jan. 12 and the Atlanta auditions will air Jan. 13, the network announced Wednesday. Auditions for the ninth season of the popular singing competition will also be held in Chicago; Orlando, Fla.; Dallas; Los Angeles and Denver.
